Have no idea why this posted like this. My apologies.

Fixed for you...especially since that was hurting my eyes.

Have searched, but I can’t find an answer.

I have a 30 year old permitted deck that needs replacing. I’m just replacing the decking and rails, not the joists.

The present decking is 2 X 6 boards, but when getting estimates, most of the contractors want to use 5/4 boards. However, one contractor said 5/4 wouldn’t be to code because of the diagonal. Does anyone know if this is the case? Joists are 16” on center.

Thanks.

I dont know if local code actually says anything about thickness of planks for a diagonal installation, though manufacturers do have spacing requirements. If you're going with a composite, they want 12" centers for a diagonal layout with their 5/4 material. If you're using wood, 5/4 can generally span 16" spacing.

I'm using wood. I read through previous posts and it seems that it would be NYS code, not local code, that dictates this. I just can't find it online.

Thanks. On a 45 degree diagonal it becomes like 33" nail to nail.

Hmm. I measured 33" between nails. Maybe it's not a 45 degree angle. I'll have to check that.

5/4 is what is typically used. I would just add deck joists in-between the existing joists and then use 5/4. That should also save you money in materials and labor.
