I am moving from Brooklyn to Shirley. The northern part of Shirley next to Brookhaven airport and Dowling College. I wanted to get a feel of what this area is like. I have kids, so I want to really be sure of what I am buying. I can't afford other areas because I am the only one working in my household. But passing by the area, it's seems alright. Please help. Thanks.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Shirley

For those who may not be familiar with Shirley:

Shirley is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southeast part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the south-central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Shirley in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Yaphank and the Hamlet of Manorville; on the east by the Hamlet of Manorville, the Hamlet of Mastic and the Hamlet of Mastic Beach; on the south by Bellport Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Brookhaven and the Hamlet of Yaphank.

The Hamlet of Shirley has a different border than does the "Shirley, NY 11967" ZIP code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Shirley and a place can have other than a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Shirley): places that have a "Shirley, NY 11967" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Shirley are in the Hamlet of Mastic and the Hamlet of Mastic Beach; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Shirley with a "Mastic, NY 11950" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

Wow, I really appreciate all the positive feedback. The only reason I am driving myself crazy is because I do want the best for my kids. I even checked out the sex offender registry which suprisingly is very low compared to other towns in Long Island.

Don't move to Shirley. What a crappy town. So dirty, slummy & poor. Stay away!

I would not move to Shirley. If Shirley was the only place I could afford to buy, I would just rent in a better area. If I could only rent it would be somewhere other than Shirley. If I couldn't afford to rent anywhere but Shirley, I would move off the Island altogether. Just one persons honest opinion.

North Shirley is probably the better part of Shirley but I would try Selden first. Try North of Middle Country Rd. Houses are nice and neighborhoods are better then Shirley and Middle Country schools are far better then William Floyd or Longwood (depending which school zone you fall into).
