I'm staying in Greenport for the US Open (Shinnecock, Southhampton) and I've heard the traffic will likely be horrible trying to get to the event.
Looks like there's a North and South Ferry through Shelter Island that has car access. Would this be a better way to get down there? I'm figuring EAST of the event would be far less traffic.
Yes. Do the ferry from Greenport to Shelter Island, Drive across SI to the south ferry, take the ferry to Sag Harbor, then take back roads to the Open. Definitely don’t drive from Greenport to Southampton directly. It’ll be horrific.
Still a horror show. Traffic was insane today.
Probably cost you 40 bucks or so in ferry money.
Be respectful of the locals and obey traffic laws.
Its feeding time for the cops.
Unless you are a player, you can't park at the event or anywhere near it. And, the designated parking lot is way west of Shinnecock, at Westhampton Airport. So, arriving in a car east of Southampton is of little value, someone is dropping you off at the course, in which case you are better off coming from the east rather than the west. Otherwise, drive to Westhampton and get on the shuttle bus.
NYCSport is missing a huge bit of information. The USGA has parking with a free shuttle to the golf course in Bridgehampton at the Hampton Classic horse show site. Take the Shelter Island ferries and head to Snake Hollow Rd in Bridgehampton.

The Shelter Island ferry only takes cash, and as Karl mentions watch the speed limits.
Excellent and thank you.
