We moved into a home that already had a legal accessory apartment. However, the permit had expired a few months before we bought the house. We too wanted to rent it out so got friends to live in it for awhile. They will be leaving in a few weeks and we plan to do a decent makeover to it.
We closed off one of the exits that I'm assuming was one of the things that made it legal. We do not want anyone to have access to the inside of our home from the inside of the apartment. The windows are large enough for a person to get out of, but are not considered the right size to be a legal egress window. Does anyone know the codes to make an accessory apartment legal? I can find information on the application to apply for the permit, but nothing on the code to make it legal. A few things about off street parking, etc. But nothing regarding the general code of how the apartment needs to be "built" to be accepted. Obviously its been approved before and the only thing we changed was an exit door so we really need to get a legal egress window but cant find any info on what the size is actually supposed to be (heard a few possibilities from a few different people). Or the rules on the smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Nothing is stated anywhere I can find and we would like to do it right the first time. Figured I would try this before trying to get to the town when I work all day.
Thanks for any input!
