Okay, I have to respond to that. I'm a lifelong resident who has never been "on the teet" as you put it, nor have any of my family. As a mortgage-free retiree (with NO pension, btw) I see a few of my friends leaving for other parts of the country -- usually the Carolinas or Florida or the Southwest -- but not all. Some stay because they have family here, most often grown kids or grandkids. Yes they know said relatives could relocate but my friends figure, why not stay here as long as we're all within an acceptable distance. Acceptable may mean "within an hour's drive from home", by the way, especially as we Baby Boomers get older and may not want to deal with the hassles of flying. I sure as heck don't. If I can't get somewhere and back in my own car within 24 hours, I don't go. Period.
Family proximity is not the driving force for me although it does happen to exist (my son and DIL and grandchild live 20 miles away.) I stay because after weighing all the pros AND CONS for me personally, the pros outweigh the cons. I don't expect others to agree with my reasons and they're not open for discussion here. But I am not "in denial" as you put it. I don't look at Long Island through rose colored glasses. But in the end, there's no place in the USA that I'd rather live than here.
