Hi,

My family of four is relocating to NYC for a job in Long Island City. I am learning that it will be incredibly hard to get my 11th grader admitted to any school as a transfer student. Does Nassau County have open registration or do they also limit 11th grade transfers?

Can folks let me know their opinions about the best school districts within 1 hour commuting time to LIC?

Thanks!

Best on Nassau county/USA? Jericho. 30+ min drive depending on traffic
Great Neck is good too and a lot closer to the city.

However, you need to be zoned to the school district and seeing that you live in NYC, you cannot apply to Nassau County schools.

I don't understand why you are having a hard to to admit a transfer student. Are you picking the school close to the home or highend like Stuyvesant high school?

Are you trying to get into an application high school in NYC? Long Island schools don't work like that but you have to live in the district that you want to attend. As always it comes down to budget, not just commute time.

Yeah. This confused me too. The school your child goes to depends on where you live.

So if you wanted to go to Jericho schools, you'd have to live in Jericho. You don't apply as others have mentioned.

NYC schools are different than LI schools. So as someone else mentioned, if you are living in NYC, you cannot go to any school in Nassau County.

I think what OP is trying to say is that it is hard to get an admission during the year to NYC schools so he wants to try Nassau.

To OP:
1. You need to live in one of the Nassau towns to get into high school in that district.
2. There is no issue to get admitted mid-year to NYC high schools unless it's a specialized/selective placement high school. Having said that, unless a high school is specialized/selective, it is most likely not a good high school.
3. Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has a stop at Hunterspoint which some commuters take for their jobs in LIC.

They're all the same. Pick a nice neighborhood.

Hi! I’m sorry I wasn’t clear! We are relocating back to the NYC area and are struggling to figure out school situations for my then 11th grader and 8th grader. We’ve wanted to move into Queens, by have learned that most quality schools in NYC won’t take an 11th grade transfer (esp in June, when we’d move) and so we are trying to think about moving to Nassau and commuting for my husband’s job in LIC. So my question is what neighborhoods would folks recommend for us to consider that are within one hour commuting distance to LIC and have good schools? Does that make sense?

It makes sense but it also makes a difference if your budget is $400K vs. $800K. Without that piece no one can make a reasonable recommendation.

That said there are just a few to avoid and the rest should fit the bill.

Anything along south shore of Nassau is close to trains for a slightly less brain deading commute.
Valley Stream, Lynbrook, E Rock, RVC, Baldwin, The Dirty O' and even a little further east you have Freeport, Merrick, Bellmore, etc...All have mediocre LI schools and wide variety of housing stock fron knock downs to million dollar Buttafuoco shrines.

We're going to need a budget to determine which town fit your needs.
