Sure we do. It's called Retail Therapy, LOL

Some years back I was emailing with someone who lives in the San Joaquin Valley area about primary food crops etc and mentioned that back the day, Long Island Ducking was a big thing and also Peconic Bay scallops, but those days are gone. She asked me "So what does Long Island primarily produce nowadays?" I replied, "Shoppers."

She thought I was kidding, LOL

Yeah there is no culture here anymore.
It's just a mish-mash of self absorbed buttholes.

if I was a millionaire I'd have a condo actually in San Diego, not LA. La Jolla, or Pacific Beach, etc. imo that's some of the nicest real estate in the country, if not the world. I love San Diego. Very safe, clean, and less traffic than LA. Lots of homeless, though. Also to whoever said "it's too hot" has not been to SoCal much. It doesn't usually get extremely hot and humid (like a Miami would). It's a Mediterranean climate, not tropical, or subtropical. Average temperature in August is probably about 70-72ish. New York State gets much hotter in the summer, on average.

cheers.
Yes. I was in SoCal this past July and I was actually chilly. Wore a hoodie for a week straight.

LA is horrible, so grungy & grimey.

But people there LOVE it.

I will never understand the appeal.

San Diego is nice (to visit). I couldn't live in SoCal.

It's just a west coast version of the LI attitude.
They know LA is a toilet bowl so they need to boast how great it is to compensate for the truth.

I've lived in both SoCal and now LI.

It's not even a comparison - SoCal all day everyday. The weather is awesome; you can go relax on the beach in the middle of February. Everyone is much more relaxed and laid back.

The boardwalk beach towns there are way better than here. Newport Beach is amazing. Long Beach here on it's absolute best day of the summer can't compare to Newport Beach on it's worst day.

I didn't really care for LA itself, but the towns to the north and south are great. Take ride down the PCH and go hiking for an afternoon in the canyons in Laguna Beach.

The traffic can be rough there, but it's rough here too. I'd say they're on par with one another, maybe a little worse out there, and there's really no such thing as public transit or a train system.

The only "culture" LI has consists of cutting people off in traffic and pronouncing "coffee" like "kwahfee".

I moved because my household income is about triple here what would have been if I stayed in SoCal. All things being equal though, I'd still be out there.

I've been eyeing Orange county for years. Glad to hear from someone who's actually lived it. Both my parents are still alive, 85 years old, so that's the only thing keeping me here in this Moderator cut: language removed known as NY.

Yeah Orange County was where I lived. If you like the beach, I strongly recommend Newport Beach/Balboa Peninsula. It's a beach community and you can walk everywhere.

The downside is the water on the Pacific coast is quite colder than the water here on the Atlantic coast.

Lol. I don’t know how you correlate the opinion of someone in Thousand Oaks which is in the LA exurbs to “anyone in Cali”. Most kids out here don’t take school buses because most kids are walking distance to their school. And most kids do walk to school. Some may get dropped off by car, but probably 80% Walk. We do use buses for extracurricular stuff, like sports teams. And if you are in LA or a surrounding city (not the burbs) and you choose to send your kid to a school that’s not their home school, then you likely put them on a metro bus with a school discount.

But schools are crappy out here. Unless you live in an area where homes cost a fortune. Then schools are probably good up to middle school.

Near water/beaches. Near a big city. Both have similar liberal political governments and high taxes. Both have a lot of traffic. So besides family or job reasons, why wouldn’t you choose the area with nice weather nearly all year vs months of cold, snow and ice? If you like LI it seems like you should love Southern California.
For one, I love snow, changing leaves of fall & seasons. SOCAL is brown & dry. I love how green & colorful things are on LI & the Northeast in general.

Not everyone loves warm, sunny weather all the time.
