People looking to leave LI (and/or concerned about home values) should bless and thank the immigrants and persons of color who want to buy their old tract houses for hundreds of thousands. The r.e. market would tank completely without them.
Immigrants have more hustle than the native-born, and one unmentioned story is the way they pool their resources (manpower and money) and start import-export businesses, etc.. This demographic has the money to pay the taxes.
Loads of family-run small businesses are located in Queens and Brooklyn. Take a look at the signs on the stores and you'll see they're keeping the NY economy afloat and repopulating LI.
I haven't read through this thread, but assume the regulars came out to share their bias and snark about immigrants. Ef that and deal. Many people of color have money, and it doesn't involve working for the taxpayers.

As for your observation, LI has been run by Italians for decades. Not as much anymore, but the NC machine was basically an Italian stronghold. They're also the source of NY's great pizza. Capiche, Bella?
