My son has severe dyslexia. We are relocating from NYC to LI. The NYC elementary school he has been in was very generous with services and support. In September, he will be starting Middle School and I am looking for the best districts for services/support for dyslexic learners. We are already looking at Half Hollow Hills, Northport/East Northport, Harborfields school districts, but are willing to consider any district that would provide the support my son needs. We're willing to relocate in Nassau or Suffolk - just looking for a good fit. If you are able to give any suggestions based on your own experience, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

What’s his classification? SLD I imagine.

The good news is that if he’s already classified and he was provided with services in a NYC elementary school you won’t have a LI district refuse to do anything. And if his disability isn’t behavioral at all most schools will accommodate him fine.

The only challenge might be the change to middle school and their desire to do another assessment.

I’d start by calling districts and talking with CSE departments if you don’t get specific applicable feedback here.

Default Thank you!

Thank you for replying. Yes - He is classified as SLD. We were so lucky throughout elementary school - I'm just hoping I make the right choice. Heard so many stories of parents having to fight tooth and nail for the services their child needs. I will start calling districts directly - thank you for the suggestion.

North Shore. We have been extremely pleased with the services and accommodations made for our child.

I had to fight for my kids but they were ADHD with behavioral issues, so OHI. Many districts aren’t equipped for this as they weren’t behind academically.

Others will chime in with good candidates and then I’d call the CSE chair in that district. He/she would then be able to describe what accommodations are present.

Again, as your son is already classified and on an IEP that by law has to continue until/unless a new assessment changes things.

IF you are interested in a private school that specializes in Special Ed there is the Vincent Smith school in Port Washington. It is well regarded or at least was a few years ago, but it is pricey.
