The South Shore buys you more, so have a look at the Village of Lynbrook. To the north of Sunrise, the area around Hempstead Avenue/Franklin Avenue has nice homes and a main line RR station is close by.
South of Sunrise, focus on the area around Union Avenue, which is close to Hewlett and East Rockaway. The northern part of Lynbrook may be less flood prone though. Check the fema maps.
Lynbrook has a few Jewish temples, but it's not hardcore Jewish by any means. Schools are top rated, taxes are high average or less, and I think you could buy something really nice for less than $800K.
You are reasonably still young at 32. Save up another 3-5 years...or until your child hits public school age; maybe the markets will cool off......or maybe not.
Port Washington is great but your budget won't get you much. No offense to your budget - it's a lot of money - but Port Washington is crazy. To me, Merrick woods is the clear winner for you on LI.
why not Syosset? You work there and Wife can take LIRR at either Syosset, Hicksville or Bethpage. I see a lot of decent houses in Syosset for $800k and under but taxes are averaging about $20K. Also a healthy Jewish population.
I think you mean Oceanside. RVC is conservative Catholics.
