Hi everyone,

My wife and I are closing on a house in Seaford and we just learned that we have to pay a private company for water? I just assumed it would be thru the town? The current owners use NY American Water but I see their reviews are terrible! Do we have any options on who to use? And what's your average monthly water bill?

As far as I know NY American Water is the only Choice as far as water companies go. I live in Suffolk so I could not tell you what a monthly water bill would be. Ask the current owners what their bill was. In sufflok we use suffolk cpounty water authority. My mom lives in Nassau and agrees that NY American water is terrible.

House with 2 sinks, one bathroom, dishwasher, laundry, two seniors.

It is my unproven claim that in recent years the firm was traded between various national water chains mainly for the purpose of bidding up the value, as someone would inflate stock. The water companies would probably like to sell it to a government agency at higher value, and for that reason they have been paying top dollar to each other as they trade ownership. The Wantagh Fire Department annually complains about the per-hydrant cost, something over $200 annually. It is a big item in their budget.
---
Long Island Clean Water, Air and Soil (CAWS) has been active complaining about the price increases.
---
Note: Seaford homes and the fire department used private wells until about 1948 it coaxed New York Water Service of Merrick to extend its lines to the border of the Town of Hempstesd (Seaford) and Town of Oyster Bay (Massapequa).

Newsday of 9.10.2020 has two letters to the editor on this topic, one from an industry spokesman, one from a homeowner in Oceanside with huge water bills. Both letters are germane to this thread.

My mom said there is a petition going around against American water. So many complaints about them.

I'm in Oceanside and have NY American Water. In the colder months my bill is $25-$30, and in the summer it can be $100-$125 on a high month. That's running the sprinklers and regularly flushing my boat's engine.

Unfortunately you're stuck with whatever water district you're in, and American Water covers a large area of Nassau County. No other option available to you
