I need a house/apartment to rent on Long Island, preferably Eastern Nassau, at least 2 BR's & 2 bths, furnished, for a couple of months until around Xmas. I live in FL, and my first grandchild is about to be born on LI around Thanksgiving. Because of the quarantine for people from FL, I need to come up to NY early, but of course, no one knows the exact date.

I've looked on airbnb, vrbo, apartments.com, rent.com - finding nothing except houses in the hamptons at like 10 - 30 G/mo. Ridiculous. Is there a good source I am missing?

Rental laws are extremely tenant friendly in NY so you may have difficulty with this, because (despite your story) people will be afraid they won't be able to get rid of you when a few months are up. Also, they lose out on renting to someone who is going to stay for a year or more. Background checks cost money, etc etc. Craigslist is the only venue you've missed but of course one needs to be careful with CL.

Thanks - prefer to stay away from CL - I know people who have been burned there, even when being very careful.

The likelihood of you finding anything suitable to rent in Nassau is slim to none - most have been taken over by NYC COVID escapees.

That's what it seems like. And I need to be a FL Covid Escapee!

Look in Long Beach for the winter. I once found a sublet in the winter for four months.

Good luck I needed this and it proved to be a major pain. Eagle rock apartments in Woodbury offers short term rentals. Not Nassau but only a few minutes away Avalon in melville offers short term leases also. Both are expensive, I didn’t rent from either as i got lucky and found a whole house short term.

Hotel/motel. Ask for long term rates. Sometimes they have monthly. Companies use this for traveling employees often in place of corporate housing. Especially look at "all suites" types of properties. Worth shooting the mgr an email.

How did you find the house?

I think I'm too old for AValon :-)
