Does the TOH require a permit for widening your driveway? I tried looking it up on the Building Dept. page and it seems that if the driveway doesn't interfere with a highway, then no permit is required? Am I correct in this? It is a single car driveway that I am looking to expand for a second car.
In the TNH the rule was you could widen the driveway but not the apron without a permit, because then you are at the end of your property and on to town owned road. That may have changed.
Typically no, unless changing grade of the space you're taking over as it affects drainage. Best to check with the Highway Department.
Rest assured though, that your neighbors will probably be concerned enough to complain to the Town even if no permit is required. People have had nothing to do but sit home and stare at their neighbors, or work from home and expect the rest of the world to be quiet for their zoom meetings.
I can tell you when my neighbors had their driveways done years again they needed a permit because the town wanted an electrical box under the apron in case underground utilities were installed. Pause here for laughter. If you aren’t changing the apron I wouldn’t bother.
It could depend on where the utilities are, if you have a plat indicating.
One of our towns had the gas line over the electric...or vice versa...and the mail truck and trash truck over time wore down that one spot, which happened to be where the mail and trash drivers stopped. It was town idiocy and they have to reroute new lines and now want to be informed about many issues utility related.
Does widening aprons on the driveway increase property tax?
Everything increases property tax. Even more so if you use blacktop, instead of concrete or pavers.
