When I was purchasing my house in TOB years ago, I was told by my inspector that it was absolutely unnecessary to do radon test, because there's no such hazard for Long Island houses.
But this doesn't seem to be true as I just saw a report on "Radon levels in Long Island homes":

So, have you guys ever done radon test, and do you have a radon mitigation system operation in your basement?
Long Island’s radon levels are about .05, Almost non existent. Any level is an concern, with 2-3 being average for any area. I’ve looked in the Poconos many years ago for a vacation home. I looked at this one house & it had a Radon ventilation system installed. After researching, that area had levels well above 8
The #1 cause of LUNG CANCER is from radon. No wonder many say “but they never smoked a day in their entire life” Many don’t know about radon. I didn’t either until I ask the RE agent about the ventilation unit.
The ground around the foundation of my home is a mix of sand and clay, which are not conducive to radon. Somewhere rocky like parts of the north shore should be more careful.
There is no natural formations of uranium, thorium, or radium on LI. As a result there is only a very low risk of radon gas in LI homes. Doesn't matter if your soil is rocky or sandy. It all depends on the radioactive materials, if they aren't there, you can't get radon gas.
Newsday scaring people- what else is new with them or the rest of media these days? No radon concern on LI since we are on sand.
