Does anyone ever take the Northern State Parkway, going West, after 6:00pm? It seems that there's always a slowdown between Exits 24-26, yet never an accident or incident that would explain it. And then magically, the traffic picks up again.... Is the highway just designed wrong between those exits? Does anyone know the reason?

A couple of reasons come to mind. NSP just like its' cousin SSP are both curved roads and traffic naturally slows (for most reasonable people) on curves. The second reason is you are getting closer to the merge with GCP and lastly there are a lot of major roads between those exits. You have NHP road, Shelter Rock and Lakeville that all come together to the parkway. Once people are off the merge lane things open up. Drove that route for years - it never changes.

That slowdown exists to a greater or lesser extent 20 hours a day, basically every day of the year. My wife and I joke every time you come around the curve and the North Shore Towers come into view, the traffic builds, and then dissipates right after the towers. It is a force field.

There’s slowdowns and standstills at every major merge.

"Is the highway just designed wrong between those exits?"

For their original intended purposes? No.
For efficient traffic flow? yes.

People forget the parkways were basically over glorified horse and buggy trails.
They were designed for leisurely strolls at lower speeds in your old massive pile of Detroit steel.
Look at the vehicles on the road during that era, when the parkways were built.

And were meant to go from park to park rather than town to town.

Yup. Supposedly the bridges were built low to prohibit buses from the city.
