Seems like a pretty high number - more than double last year for Memorial Day Weekend. Did anyone get stopped at any of the checkpoints? What happens at a checkpoint? You pull up - A cop asks you if you have been drinking and shines a light in your face to see your eyes and sniff for any smell of booze. If they suspect you have been - they tell you to pull to the side and test you.
I'm not trying to cause trouble - just curious. A large number of those arrested were Latinos. Is it because they aren't educated on DWI laws or is it accepted or common in their communities to drive after drinking?
I was. They use to check every 6th car but lately its been an all out blitz. The cop had a handheld flashlight with a sensor on the end that detects booze. This was the 3rd time I hit a checkpoint in 2 years. Everytime I saw them I had my ID, insurance and reggie ready to pass to the officer. I was spoken to for about 5 minutes, I had my wife and kids in the car and she spoke with them also.
Your a real moron if you drink and drive, the only place I ever even think about having a beer is my own backyard.
Who cares what race they are? Break the law and go to jail. Buddy of mine was stupid enough last 4th of July to get one. You can't even imagine the nightmare it caused him and his family. He regrets it every day.

It was not really because of the police officer that was injured. They do this every Memorial Day and Fourth of July. And, they should. One guy was going the wrong way on a highway. All of us can remember the terrible accident caused by a drunk driver that killed a lovely little girl and the limo driver.

I went through one on Sat night (in Suffolk though)...it was pretty standard...where are you coming from, where are you going, have you had anything to drink??. They did not check my license but did glance at the registrations and my plates.

Correct but its the first time they posted the suspects name and picture....they are sending a big message.
I still can't think about the limo accident......horrible.

Yes, exactly. It actually was even more so b/c of the officer that got hit recently. And yes, that's exactly why they published the pics. They are really trying to send a message b/c just think how many drunks must be out there if an officer pulls over one and gets hit by another. So yes, that was what made the crackdown even more so this year.
And I still shudder think of that poor family of Katie Flynn. Sickens me and breaks my heart every time.
Do you think it is fair that they published photos, names and addresses of those arrested? One guy claims he was fired from his job for it. Another claims he has been getting phone calls at home harrassing him and his family. None of these people have had a day in court yet and are considered innocent until proven guilty.
