Presently around 20 districts use armed guards ranging from around $100k to almost $1M per year. I don't see this being effect as has been the case around the country and I'm sure the money could be put to better use.

At least 20 school districts on Long Island have hired or are planning to add armed guards to their campuses, marking the rise of a controversial effort to heighten security at their schools, a Newsday analysis has found.

The armed districts range from some of the Island’s largest, like Smithtown and Half Hollow Hills, with thousands of students, to some of the smallest, such as Montauk and Tuckahoe, with enrollments in the hundreds.

In some districts it’s 1 percent of the budget. In others is .05 percent of the budget. What would you use the money for that’s better ?

Newsday seemed to think the presence of duly licensed armed guards would excite its viewers.

It’s the lib bubble. Normal folks know it is a prudent move. My district has a mix of retired police/FDNY/prison guys and half of them (or more) are related to the students. Works out well and I have no idea if some are armed.

That’s the thing. They don’t even hafta actually be armed.
Just let everyone think they are. Kids are dumb. They’ll fall for it.
Or just go ahead and have armed guards. Either way would probably work.

Newsday tells all its readers which districts have and don't have armed guards.

They really are that stupid....

Good point.

They were so busy desperately trying to stir it up (their lib bubble tells them armed guards are bad because all guns are bad and therefore everyone would freak at the ‘news’) they made double idiots of themselves. Normal folks find armed guards reasonable and your point is the icing on the cake.

It used to be Newsday was like a stopped clock in that they had one or two good stories in each edition, now it is once a month.

Most schools already have guards, this is armed guards at an additional cost. I don’t think this is a practical solution based on the history. If it’s in your district you can voice your opinion when you vote on the budget or attend the meeting.

Yes, additional guards were added several years ago and there are some folks who think they are unnecessary. Ditto arming some of the guards in some of the districts.

Why would they need armed guards? NY has strict gun laws so why would they have concerns?
