I would pic Bay Shore b/c Im a firm believer in either north shore or south shore properties. The middle of the island is usually more bland. I live in Islip and am in downtown Bay Shore almost every weekend for dinner, drinks, the theater, etc.
It's true parts of Bay Shore (note it's spelled as two words) are not the greatest, but as previous posters have noted some areas are quite nice and the downtown is on the upswing. It is right on the Great South Bay, and the school, while not lily white is not half as bad as some would have you think. My sister works for the school district and gladly sent her two boys though the entire system. They are both doing well in good collages. On the other hand Selden represents all that is ugly and unappealing about Long Island. No downtown area, just rt 25 with all the beauty of the rear of a strip mall. I suppose it all depends on what you want.
selden is just really bland.. theres plenty of local shopping, the smith haven mall is 10 minutes away, suffolk communtiy college is down the road, not too much crime.. but other than thats its just ur basic middle class run of the mill town.. which isnt necessarily a bad thing, depending on what ur looking for
