We just arrived in town yesterday and need to find a place to live within the next couple of weeks.

Miraculously, we looked at our first apartment today and it fulfilled most of our requirements. It's about a half mile from LIRR on Union Ave. It's less than 10 minutes from my husband's new workplace and has a lot of other great features. However, we don't know the area and I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

The apartment community was quite nicely laid out with a playground and a swimming pool, however the area surrounding it is quite commercial/industrial. Is this common in this area? Is it a safe neighborhood?

Are there other areas nearby that would be nicer?

I told my husband today I thought we would probably look at 10 or 12 other places and end up coming back to this one.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Ronkonkoma

For those who may not be familiar with Ronkonkoma:

Ronkonkoma is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast part of the Town of Islip, in the west part of Suffolk County, along the Islip/Smithtown and the Islip/Brookhaven town lines.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip is bordered on the north by Lake Ronkonkoma, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven (the Islip/Smithtown and the Islip/Brookhaven town lines); on the east by the Hamlet of Holbrook; on the south by the Hamlet of Bohemia; and, on the west by the Village of the Islandia and the Hamlet of Hauppauge.

The Hamlet of Ronkonkoma has a different border than does the "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma and a place can have other than a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma): places that have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma are in the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Towns of Smithtown and Brookhaven and in the Hamlet of Bohemia; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma with a "Central Islip, NY 11722" and "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address.

I'm guessing its the apartments off of peconic ave, I work over in the commercial area down 5th ave. It seems like a nice neighborhood over there.

I lived in the Colony Park apartments on Peconic for 3 years before I took a job transfer last summer. The apts are good value for $, as far as LI goes- we spent almost every weekend for 6 mos looking at different complexes. We didn't have any hassles there and I felt safe walking around at night by myself.

Default Union Avenue

That particular area has some industrial feel because of the Railroad which is a major hub for Long Island. I think that there are some railroad work areas near there. Also, there is some industrial type business buildings in that area. However, it isn't a bad area, no. It's not known for crime or anything that would make you uncomfortable to live there. You won't feel bad or hate the place while you get settled.

There aren't tons of apartment complexes in Lake Ronkonkoma (Ronkonkoma is more known as the the business/industrial area, Lake Ronkonkoma is known for the residential area, both share the same zip code) but mostly private houses. There are people who rent houses and you might prefer that if it's in your means.

I've lived in Lake Ronkonkoma most of my life and I'm content here. I hope you have an uneventful move and enjoy your time here.

just remember you have macarthur airport a mile away (maybe less), and the ronkonkoma train station, which is a major hub, down the street from there. that along with union ave being a pretty industrial street for the most part, dont expect it to be very quiet. but i think that is a pretty nice complex, if im thinking of the same one.

While most of the places in the Hamlet of Lake Rokonkoma have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779" mailing address, other parts of the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma have a "Nesconset, NY 11767", "Lake Grove, NY 11755" and "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address.

For those who may not be familiar with Lake Ronkonkoma:

Lake Ronkonkoma is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) partly in the southeast part of the Town Smithtown and partly in the center-west part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the central part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Smithtown and the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by Hamlet of Nesconset in the Town of Smithtown and the Village of Lake Grove and the Hamlet of Centereach in the Town of Brookhaven; on the east by the Hamlet of Centereach and the Hamlet of Holtsville in the Town of Brookhaven; on the south and west by the Hamlet of Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip (the Brookhaven/Islip Town line and the Smithtown/Islip Town line).

Lake Ronkonkoma is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Lake Ronkonkoma have a "Ronkonkoma, NY 11779", "Nesconset, NY 11767", "Lake Grove, NY 11755" and "Holbrook, NY 11741" mailing address.

I grew up in Centereach and always found Ronkonkoma to be fine. I think there are good and bad areas just like any other town but overall it's a regular town.

Really ? It changed that much since the post from last year ?
If you are a problem seeker no place is safe for you. I have been living in Ronkonkoma for past 8 years, I have no problems with the area....
