Christie is facing up to the issue with overspending in NJ you have to wonder if our elected representatives will do the same here. The federal and state governments just do not have the funding to support these constant increases.
"This sets Cuomo on a collision course with lawmakers and their powerful patron, the New York State United Teachers union, experts say.
"School aid is always a battleground, but never more so than next year," said Elizabeth Lynam, director of state studies for the nonpartisan Citizens Budget Commission. "Schools really are facing large reductions because the federal stimulus money runs out and the state has a huge budget gap."

They have to back out RE assets from determining wealth.

the MEDIAN salary is $75K, and 95% earn under $100K, in even well paying LI districts. Getting to $100K requires 20+ years experience. This is for a profession that requires a master's degree and is in a high cost area. Please tell me where you're going to find anyone halfway decent who will work for half that.
Now, tell me how you're going to stem the huge rise in unfunded mandates and special education, which is pushing up the cost of education everywhere.
Do you mean MEDIAN salary or MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME. There is a big difference. I don't think the median salary on LI is $75K, probably more like $50K to $60K.
I think we should move away from funding schools on the backs of property owners. Owning a home does not mean that one has the ability to afford to pay the taxes on their home.
Schools should be funded via income tax. If someone earns $2 million, then they can afford to contribute more to pay for public education. In turn, those individuals that lose their jobs and don't have incomes as a result, SHOULD NOT have to sell their homes because they can't afford the taxes. Maybe every homeowner should have to pay a base tax of $3,000 on their home so that everyone has to contribute. Above the $3,000, his/her income should determine how much they should pay.
I think it would make for a more fair system. You pay what you can afford to pay

Reason: My original post wasn't clearly written
More should be done to reign in spending in the districts. Consolidation would be a step in the right direction (though I wouldn't be surprised if those who complain the loudest about the cost of school taxes would complain the loudest about consolidation...
With that being said, I think we need to realize that in some senses you get what you pay for. Long Island as a whole has one of if not the best schools out of any region of the country. Schools which are generally considered just average on Long island would be deemed as excellent in most of the country. If your not going to invest & put money into schools well, just look at Florida.
First, I believe you are absolutely right about consolidation. People would scream about consolidation when happening in their own districts. I think this has to do with some sort of misguided loyalty and obsessive control over thier immediate surroundings. To me...not worth several thousand dollars per year.
As far as our rankings, nationally...LI ranks high with several schools, but again to the degree that we are taxed?? In other words, are we really getting what we pay for?? Loyola High School(correlate Loyola College), a pretegious high school in Baltimore, MD, charges $16000.00 per year for tuition. If we were not paying the amount of taxes we pay, we could afford this private schooling. This is just one example. Many states offer above average private schools where tuition is comparable to our annual taxes. Basically, we are not getting the bang for our buck!
I CAN NOT STAND WHEN PEOPLE COMPLAIN THAT TEACHERS MAKE TOO MUCH! HAVE YOU EVER SPENT A FULL DAY IN THE CLASSROOM?
Teaching is an intellectually, emotionally and physically draining job. Let's not even mention the amount of time spent at home planning and grading OR the amount of personal money spent on classroom items or rewards for the children. Or shall I mention that even though my husband and I are both teachers and we struggle with money just as everyone else does. My friends in business make double twhat we make and we have more education (both have our Masters and 75 additional graduate credits).
I am NOT saying that teachers make too little of a salary; they are definately are worth what we make! I wish we could send all of the teacher haters into my 8th grade Social Studies class and see what they say at the end of the day!!!
In my opinion, teachers deserve what they make and more. The problem is with the teachers union. Do they fight for teachers...yes. Is it altruistic...NO. Unions have become BIG businesses. They control most of the taxpayers money.
The problem is not with teachers salaries. However, taxpayers should not be expected/demanded to maintain your lifestyle in retirement. You should contribute and take losses/gains just as every other citizen does. BUT...this is controlled by the union. Just a little perk/jerk to the taxpayer.
That is why people get upset...not your salary. We work hard too, but we aren't propped up at everyone's expense when things go south.
Marxist Socialist income redistribution does not work.
