Looking to move out of my one-bed coop and into a house in LI.
The only problem is that I do not know any of the neighborhoods to look for.
I found a place around Lakeview ave and Waterview Dr. It looks nice but again - I have absolutely no idea about the area. Some maps call it Lakeview, others list it as West Hempstead and yet another site calls its Rockville center.
Can anyone shed some light on the area? Is it nice? How are home prices?
Opinions vary on Lakeview. Run a search in the forum for previous threads and you will see what I mean. It is not in what is considered a very good school district for LI either (SD = Malverne), so look into the SD carefully if schools are important to you.
knick71, please bear in mind that Lakeview is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address and that places in the Hamlet of Lakeview have a "West Hempstead, NY 11552" and "Rockville Centre, NY 11570" mailing address.
Lakeview is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center section of the Town of Hempstead, in the southwest part of Nassau County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Lakeview in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Malverne-Oaks and the Hamlet of West Hempstead; on the east by the Village of Rockville Centre; on the south by the Village of Rockville Centre and the Village of Lynbrook; and, on the west by the Village of Malverne.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource
I've heard the mixed reviews of Malverne SD. Strangely enough, the woman that bought my last house desperately wanted her daughter out of Malverne SD because of thug/gang etc activity, the daughter had been involved with this "element" as she called it. She feared for her life, she said these people were showing up at the house causing all sorts of problems. She lived in Lynbrook but with Malverne SD.
She told me some real crazy off the wall stories.
Oh, and guess what, daughter brought that "element" with her to the new home. Yikes! I guess they didn't move "far enough" away.
I'm still friendly with my former neighbors and they tell me the cops are at the house at least a few times a week for some reason or another. I feel bad, like I screwed my neighbors by selling to this woman. They seemed like good people looking to have a better life, but again, they probabally should've moved further away.
I'd avoid any part of Valley Stream that is west of Central Ave. As a matter of fact, I'd only look at Valley Stream houses that are in SD# 24 or 14. It is considered the Gibson area and is the nicest part of Valley Stream.
LOL!!! You don't live IN Long Island--- You live ON Long Island. Other than that I have nothing to add.
