I'm doing some remodelling and have a very small amount of stuff the garbage men wont take because there are nails in it, and the wood is too large. I also have various drywall debris, old carpet, etc.
Is there anywhere I can take this? On the garbage site it says something about private dumps. I looked into a junk removal service, but they charge a flat rate of $150 to start, and it's not really that much stuff that would make $150 worth it.
Not sure how you feel about this, but you could offer to give them $10 each ($30 total assuming you have 3 guys on the truck) and they'll almost always take it for you. If you want to go "by the book", then that's obviously not an option for you.
To all: I'm not endorsing the option I presented of paying off the sanitation workers, I'm just merely stating that it is a viable option if you don't choose to follow things to the letter of the law.

What town are you in? The sanitation crews in Brookhaven are actually pretty flexible. If you're not in Brookhaven, call your town's waste management office to find out what is/isn't acceptable and what you need to do to prepare the debris for pick up, or how to arrange for special pick up.
Do yourself a favor and make the waste as acceptable as possible:
Denail the wood, cut it down to manageable size.
Break up the drywall small enough to fit into large contractors waste bags (thicker than the lawn and leaf bags.) Make sure the bags aren't too heavy, seal them up tight so it isn't obvious that there's construction debris inside and set it out on garbage night.
If you cut the carpet into small sections, roll it and tie it off, they might be more likely to accept that as well.
I gutted my entire house and I broke up most of it and put it in the garbage left a 20 under the lid and I had no problem, I leave a STAGGERING amount of debris at the curb and they take it all.

The rules vary by town, but normally there is a weight limit for what they are obligated to lift, so as long as you don't fill the cans or bags too heavy, they should take it. Be neat and just try to discard everything in a manner that would be acceptable to you if you had to take it away.
I've put out an entire house worth of debris over the past few years, and they always, and still, take it away.
