Well I see this thread has died out for a while but i'd like to update some of the info I've encountered as I research my conversion. National grid now charges $100 a foot but offer 100ft of gas mains + 100ft of service mains to your home for free. Originally I was 287ft away from mains so they wanted me to cover the remaining 187 feet which would cost $18700. My neighbors are all a lot older and don't feel the need to make such an investment to help me out so I was stuck. I called national grid a few weeks ago though, and they said they agreed to do it for free but since this is a joint finance between myself and my wife she would have to be onboard with it and with the oil prices being low ($2.09 p/g)she's not too eager to jump on this. But I hate having to negotiate and getting my boiler serviced annually and with the fluctuations of the price there have been differences of up to $1000 a year. My question though is what's the average cost of getting an underground tank abandoned properly.
