How about Pt. Washington - a relatively short commute in what appears to be a safe town.

Port Washington can be a geographically confusing community because it is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where the majority of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address (6,652 acres) are not in the hamlet (2,732 acres): places that have a "Port Washington, NY 11050" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Port Washington are in the Village of Sands Point, the Village of Port Washington North, the Village of Manorhaven, the Village of Baxter Estates and the Village of Flower Hill.

I'd like to recommend Mineola. This is where I have lived for the past 3 years. I'm in the process of trying to sell my cape home for $465k. I work in NYC 42nd and Lex and via the Bus to F train it takes me 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to work. THe best part is that it only costs me $2.50 cents each way. I got to be honest in the afternoon it can take longer. It takes me 45 minutes by LIRR.
