I moved into my house and took over the lawn mowing last summer. Occasionally we have a lawn service guy in to prune or mow if I can't get around to it early in the year or late in the year plus we have him do the spring/fall cleanup.

He was in about 3-4 weeks ago to do the cleanup, aireate (sp?) the lawn and mow it. He also put down some chemicals. When I went to mow my mower didn't start so I got it serviced. In the meantime the lawn grew above my ankles. We had him back in this weekend to mow so that I can go forward. I had turned my sprinkler system off due to all of the rain. There are now large areas of very bright yellow/green almost neon on my lawn. The lawn itself is not dead. It is very moist. There had been a lot of clover in some of those spots.

Is this fungus, or discoloration due to long grass (clover) that was wet getting mowed and now will dry out and turn back to normal? If fungus what should I use to get rid of it?

I am not a expert but what you have said he put chemicals down which is probably killing the weeds in those spots ...is it the grass turning those colors or weeds ? post a pic if possible ..fungus is usually spotty black areas ....

Sounds like weeds/and or annual bluegrass... which is a weed. Are there a lot of seeds on the lighter colored patches?

Any self-seeding going on in these spots? I have some yellowish patches on my otherwise healthy lawn where the grass is forming seeds. That's normal. Are the spots dead/dying?

I got back last night just before it turned dark so I didn't get a great look but these are major patches. Not just 2 feet around. I wasn't able to determine if there were seeds but can tell you we did have a fair amount of weeds, clover and dandilions in front. Our back yard which didn't have many weeds is not discolored at all.

Speaking of which, anyone know how to get rid of clovers and not kill the whole lawn??

Clovers are good for your lawn, they add nitrogen.

have you tried weed & feed? The sprays don't work as well as the granules though it may be good for a few-occasion spot-treatment.

But the 5-step program is simple enough for homeowners that you don't have to fork over $500+ annually to the "pros"...

This is what a landscaper buddy of mine told me to do:

1-Crabgrass control with Feed late Apr
2-Weed & Feed. Late May
3-insect Control with Feed late June/July
4-Turf Builder early sept
5-Winterizer Oct-Nov

We were getting dandelions non-stop... I tried the ortho max spray and it killed them within a day but they grew back. Then 1 application of weed & feed (granules) last week and they are not growing AT ALL anymore. Beautiful green, except the bare spots which I still have to seed a bit (can't seed yet since the weed & feed was recently applied).

Tried the weed and feed last year, clovers were still there and ar back in abdunence this year again... annoying... I could try using the round up on them but I fear I'll take out my lawn too.
