It depends on what you put/pour down the drain
Grease, etc. doesn't belong down the drain no matter what...
Seriously, I've only had problems with my cesspool once, after 8 years (house was about 25 yrs old then), when I lived in Babylon, where I was right on the water with a high water table. Of course then they built the plant at Bergen Point for the Southwest Sewer District and that problem was over...
Was in my house in Cold Spring Harbor for 17 years and
never had a problem.
Depends on how old the cesspool is, what you flush down there, if it's in real sandy soil and ideally, your washing machine should have a dry well for the water...
Some people have it pumped every few years, but opinions vary on that, including professional opinions. Most of Suffolk County is without sewers, especially on the North Shore (although downtown Huntington has a few areas with sewers)...
Don't let is scare you, you get used to it and after a while you hardly if ever think about it - it's just a way of life
