If you have a child in day care, what are the normal policies for pulling out the child one month so you can go on a vacation ( or for grand parents visiting). My day care is asking for half-a-month retainer fee just to hold the spot. Is that normal. I have to pay $650 just so she is guaranteed a spot after I come back. Seems steep since I am getting no services for this $650.

It is about right. When my kids were in daycare many years ago, I did have to pay the week or two when we were on vacation. The reason is ; they are holding the spot for your child and cannot take another child in for that time. Its a business.

My place has the same thing, but the director was honest and told me that the chances they wouldn't take my son back after summer vacation (wife will be off) are about zilch, so don't bother with the fee.

No wait-list. To the contrary, the day care center is having trouble filling in its current spots. Many kids have dropped out, probably because of the economy. The chance of her getting the seat back after she leaves for a month seems pretty good.

If there is no wait list, I don't see why they would charge you to keep your spot. Have you tried negotiating with them or asking why they need payment to hold if there are empty spots?

Because they need cash.
