Is there really a difference between Port Jeff and Port Jeff station? I know school district is different but are they both nice areas? My moms fiance's boat is docked in Port Jeff village at Danfords and I LOVE the area. We are looking to buy a house out there and want to just make sure Port Jefferson Station is good as well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH

Yes there is a big difference which you will see immediately when driving around. The schools are not as highly rated, the real estate is much less expensive, the area is not as nice.
vmargs, Port Jefferson is a self-governing village in the Town of Brookhaven while Port Jefferson Station is a hamlet, governed at-large by the Town of Brookhaven.
NYS Geographic Glossary may be of some help to you in understanding the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
A map of the Village of Port Jefferson in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County:
The Village of Port Jefferson has a different border than does the "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address and not be in the Village of Port Jefferson and a place can have other than a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address and be in the Village of Port Jefferson): places that have a "Port Jefferson, NY 11777" mailing address that are not in the Village of Port Jefferson are in the Village of Belle Terre and the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Port Jefferson with a "Mount Sinai, NY 11766" and a "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" mailing address.
A map of the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County:
Port Jefferson Station is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name in their mailing address are not in the hamlet: places that have a "Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station are in the Village of Port Jefferson, the Hamlet of Mount Sinai, the Hamlet of Coram, the Hamlet of Terryville and the Hamlet of Setauket-East Setauket; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Port Jefferson Station with a "Setauket, NY 11733" mailing address.
Port Jefferson Station has some very nice areas and it's one of the lesser priced and taxed areas to live in in that general area of LI. But, (and this is going to sound snobby I'm sure) IMO Port Jefferson is considered a higher class town to live in over all. Whether it is or not, I do not know.

Crooks, always so down on PJS. Port Jeff Station has taken somewhat of a downward turn over the years and the schools have declined but it is not a terrible district, but average at best, but as previously stated Port Jefferson is a much better S.D. When it comes to specific areas it really depends on street to street. There are lots of streets especially in what is called the Heatherwood section which is right behind the golf course (between Rush to Janet St.) that are very nice and safe.I personally would avoid ner the Lake streets(Huron,Ontario,etc...).
