Well, there IS an LAPD so I would assume so, but I plan on going to college and living at a college in the Los Angeles area from Philadelphia, but I don't want to end up doing that for nothing.

Yes. The LAPD is very high paying and some of the suburban police departments even more so.
Just don't expect to be able to live in a big house (renting or owning), and forget about buying an SFR. Owning a condo or renting on a cop's salary is very possible.

If you're happy living in a tiny apartment (and I am personally) it's doable.

Why would you want to work for the LAPD? The city is nearly broke and they may end up laying off rookie cops. The city is looking at a $2 billion shortfall I think I read.

I don't live in SoCal anymore but from what I read Villaraigosa was sparing cops from the layoffs.
In any case, is the LASD going through similar problems? He might be interested in working for the LASD or one of the smaller departments instead, although I don't know their situations.

The LAPD pays better than almost any other police department in CA. A lot of cops live in Westlake Village just over the border in Ventura County,or used to anyway.

Simi Valley is in Ventura County and many of the LAPD live there including my brother in law who has been with LAPD since 2006. I haven't heard of too many of them living in Westlake Village. A low cost home there can go for close to $1million.

A large number of LAPD officers do live in Ventura County thanks to a California law pushed by the ACLU in the '70s forbidding cities from requiring police officers and other employees to live in the cities they work for (a la Chicago).
If this law didn't exist then there would have been far less tension between police and the communities they serve throughout the state, and there wouldn't have been so much middle class flight out of Los Angeles. Daley Sr. requiring public employees to live in Chicago helped keep Chicago from going the way of Detroit and Cleveland. It's ironic that many who would defend this law probably have no love for the ACLU whose support helped put it through the Legislature and to Jerry Brown's desk.
