Okay so here's my deal, I am a college student currently living in the San Jose area and have to relocate because of my husbands job. His job will be in Bakersfield but my major in Industrial Engineering is in POMONA.( meaning Cal Poly Pomona).

Originally we considered living halfway, meaning Santa Clarita. But now we are getting some very negative comments on the commute. HELP!

PS- We're going down there this weekend to check it out but dont know where to start

If you and your husband decide to live in Bakersfield, you will have a more Affordable Home, but you will have a longer commute to Pomona.

If you decide to live in Santa Clarita, you will pay for a more Pricey Home, but you will have a shorter commute to Pomona, but your husband will have a longer commute to Bakersfield.

In my opinion I think your best option would be to live in Bakersfield,as it will save you both more money, but please have a talk with your husband about this, because I really don't want to cause any disagreements between you both.

There's no way you can continue your education at a university (CSUB?) closer to Bakersfield? I went to the CSUB engineering web

Cal State University Bakersfield Engineering Home Page

but couldn't see a specific "Industrial Engineering" major. Perhaps you could adjust your curriculum, even if it means taking extra classes. That's what I'd do.

Bottom line: It is virtually impossible to manage a life commuting to both Bakersfield and Pomona.

This will not work, unless you pack all your classes into 2 days and can rent a room close to Pomona to stay in on school days.

If you live in Santa Clarita, your husband's commute to Bakersfield is doable, but your commute to Pomona will be hellish because of the traffic. You'll burn yourself out very quickly.

If you absolutely must stay at Cal Poly Pomona, your husband needs to look for a job closer to Pomona so you can live there.

Aren't there any other colleges you can go to to continue your education besides Pomona? Have you ever been to Bakersfield? You will indeed be in for a cultural shock in both areas. Personally, I would not live in Bakersfield as it is one of the hottest places to live, and mean hot, not Paris Hilton hot. Summer starts in May and ends in October averaging 95 to 100 degrees and rarely cools off much at night. Santa Clarita gets hot but not to the same intensity plus is much more visually pleasing but very family oriented. Hope you find a happy medium. Good luck.
