Hi,
I'm moving back to Cali from Georgia after being gone for 20 years. What would be the best way to find apartments in safe areas, without visiting the area first? I'm considering different areas in San Fernando Valley - (Chatsworth, Canoga Park, Northridge, Westlake Village), just to name a few. Thanks!

Well... I think most of Chatsworth or Westlake Village would be safer than most of Canoga Park or Northridge.

It is kind of hard to tell without visiting, because the particular building could be "bad" in a decent area...

I think it's nice to see how the building is managed or mismanaged is it clean/dirty ,etc.

Are you moving with a bunch of stuff or not much stuff?

It might be good just to rent a month to month type of apartment until you get a feel for the different areas.

Or if there is any possible way you could just come for even a few days just to go apartment hunting and check out the different areas.

It doesn't really take long to get a feel for what you feel is safe or not safe.

Besides that I would recommend Google Maps street view...try to see "walk down the street" virtual of the apartments u are considering

Are the streets dirty? Are there a bunch of junk cars? Shady looking people on the street (I've seen this on street views) ..

What kind of businesses are in the area? Is it mostly check cashing, pawn shops? Throw the address into YELP.COM or google places or something and see what is available in the area.

Another thing is looking at the zip code , checking out the demographics crime rates. On L.A times they have a mapping service that the LAPD actually links to

http://projects.latimes.com/mapping-la/crime/ Mapping LA Crime , you can put in an address and see the crime nearby.

Not sure if you have tried these things yet..but I would recommend them if not.
