Hi!

We live in Irvine and love it. We have a job opportunity in LA and thinking of moving to Manhattan beach in the next few months. Any advice on the best place to live in MB? Are the places new or old? Is it hard to find a decent place (new carpet, fresh paint, safe)? We'll be renting for the first year and would like to live close/ on the beach. Are there great markets for fresh food like Whole Foods?

We really appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!

I can't speak about renting in Manhattan Beach, but there is a new mega Whole Foods on Sepulveda north of Rosecrans.

If you think the people and houses in Newport Beach were substandard and dirty, then I'm not sure what you will think of Manhattan Beach. I am in Newport Beach quite a bit, as my in-laws live on the tip of the Balboa Penisula. I haven't seen anything run-down or dirty and we walk around the neighborhood all the time... but maybe my standards are a little lower than yours.

Sorry I should have mentioned, we lived in the War's zone, the Penn is really nice:-) I didn't mean to put down Newport it's nice but the rentals mostly run by slum lords and all of our neighbors would be loud and drunk all nights and of week and up playing drums at 4am. If we had owned a house in Crystal Cove or on the Penn would feel different:-) Thanks for your help with the Whole foods!

The war zone is typically between the streets of 19th- 45th.

You won't find too many slumlords in MB. However, with any beach city, the closer you get to the water, the more tiny, older beach cottages you will find. Some are well kept up, some aren't. In MB more than anywhere you will find them well kept, but the prices will reflect that.

Check out the Daily Breeze.com for rentals. You will be safe anywhere in MB.

Hi LH, I've lived in Manhattan Beach over 50 years. Anywhere in MB is great and safe. Of course the closer to the beach you are the more expensive it is, and there are certain areas and streets that are more desireable. The homes are a mixture of old and new and large and small, so that will depend on what your budget is. I don't see many slum lords around here as landlords get top dollar. Whole Foods, Trader Joes, just about anything you want is nearby. Let me know if you have any questions. Here is a link to a local rental co. You can look as a guest.
