I'm concerned specifically in the 90015 & 90017 zip code. Like between the West Olympic Blvd & Wilshire Blvd and around Harbor Fwy area.

I plan on going to college and living in that area, I really just want to know mostly if it's relatively safe to live in?

I do think this is a good thread mainly because downtown LA is becoming more developed and is going through a process of gentrification. There are a lot of new condo and especially loft communities present and in the works. A growing number of young professionals and college students are moving to various parts of downtown. The concern that some have (under different agendas and motivations) is what will happen to the large homeless population as this area continues to develop? Where will be they migrate to?

I'd be interested as well to see what kind of responses develop.

It is relatively safe to live in. Just don't go for long walks in the night. Daytime its safe. Night driving is safe.

I don't think most people who regularly post in this forum have ever lived downtown. Downtown has gentrified signifcantly over the last decade as there are many new condos and lofts that are going up. Most who live in these places are professionals, students, empty nesters, and people who generally enjoy urban living.

Here is a web site with a lot of downtown related news and information:

Lived downtown for three months at 6th and Main, so not that close to Olympic and the 110. That said, it's always safer during the day but is not scary-unsafe, just be careful-unsafe, at night.

Default Living in Downtown

I moved into the LUMA building in Southpark (two blocks east of Staples on 11th) last year and it was the best decision I made. Unlike homes that have declined recently, the value of my loft has increased. The people who live in my building are friendly and fun. Downtown is not yet a 24/7 town, but it's on it's way. Once LA Live is complete with clubs, resturants, and movie theaters, South Park and the Figueroa corridor will be HOT places to live and play! Everything is with in walking distance including the new Ralphs grochery store. I live and work in downtown and only drive my car on weekends...I gas up only once a month! I have to admit that I don't do alot of walking around downtown at night, but I don't fear to walk around at night either. Many of the people moving to downtown to live tend to be young professionals, artsy types, and very gay friendly. I know this sounds like an ad to live downtown, but I'm a real resident and glad to be a part of downtown!

ya sixth and main is not that nice at all!!! good thing is you wont be anywhere near there.

the area you are in, or want to be in, is just west of downtown. well its downtown ,but west of the 110. its the fringe

so if you end up closer to olympic, you will be better off if you only walk east. by loyola law, dont walk west. or too far west. that will get you closer to alvarado, and alvarado is just awful. thats one part of the city not even I like. once you pass rampart you start getting into koreatown. and that ok. still dodgy in some areas, but its ok.

the same with the northern part of your desired area. except the nasty part off wilshire starts further west. you can walk west. but not too far. just walk east into downtown and you will be fine.
well stuff happens anywhere, anytime to anyone. this is a big city. but it wont be as bad as some people might think.

i do have friends that have moved into the area. they love it, but none of them have kids. and most are very independent and adventorous.
i do have friends who grew up in the area, but this area was a completely different animal back then.
DT is changing and gettin better. i personally love it. i wouldnt live there, but thats because i prefer more green space and yards, but if i were rich, i wouldnt mind keepin a studio there...
