Could you recommend any nice area and/or apartment building in silverlake. I drove around last weekend and all apartments I saw were old. My friend who is a recently graduated doctor will work in a clinic in Silver Lake. They can afford up to $2,500/month and need two bedroom apartment. He would prefer not to commute, but if you think the area is not nice please recommend something close by. I do not know anything about silverlake, so will appreciate any information.

The hills of Silverlake and Los Feliz around Mt. Washington are the best areas. If you can find something there, that's the best area.

I'm not too familiar with the area, so ask Sorcerer68. He lives in either Silverlake or Los Feliz...can't remember. They're pretty much the same area though.

It should be no problem finding a 2-BR apt in Silver Lake. Duplexes and triplexes abound. Check craigslist.org. However, just about everything in the neighborhood is of a certain vintage. Not much new construction. It's a generally safe neighborhood, though car vandalism and gang tagging is somewhat common.

The gang tagging is more of a problem in the southern part of Silver Lake, not so common north of Sunset. Regretfully, auto break ins are a problem, although this is true in many other nice areas of LA like Brentwood. In general violent crime is low.

I can tell you're not too familiar with the area, because Mount Washington doesn't border on either Los Feliz or Silver Lake. It borders on Highland Park, Eagle Rock, and Lincoln Heights. (Of those areas, Eagle Rock is OK, Lincoln Heights is definitely NOT OK, Highland Park is attracting a lot of young people priced out of Silver Lake but does have conspicuous gang activity and was the site of some recent highly publicized racial murders.)
