Hello,

I am looking to move out to LA sometime this summer. Currently I have a job, however am working on getting a transfer out to LA. If this does not happen, I will move out sometime in July-August without anything lined up. I will have about $75k saved up and own my car outright. I will be able to live rent free as I have family that lives in LA, so I can stay with them until I can find a permanent job. Can it be done or am I crazy? Thanks.

It sounds like you're in good shape, unless the "k" is a typo.

You're more than ok. Rent/ mortgage is generally the biggest financial hurdle and finding a nice place to stay is the biggest logistical hurdle and people overcome these all the time with much less money and no place to stay lined up.

You'll be fine though. We just made the move from Arlington Heights this past August. We visit family every 6 weeks or so but otherwise there's no looking back so long as you can afford LA.

Haha yes Chicago weather is among the worst in the country, if not the worst. There are def a lot of bad parts in Chicago. I am a college grad with a Bachelors so I would think I could land a job within a few months. Thank you all for the help.

Enjoy the weather! We're about to move to Alabama...I don't think they have snow, but it's not the California sun. Santa Ana winds can be brutal, but you are probably used to winds coming off of Lakeshore, right?

Good luck!

Wow, more than do-able. Many people move out to LA job-less with not even 1/3 of what you have, nor a free place to stay. You'll be fine.

Yes, Simi Valley Mom the winds off the lake are brutal. Combine that with the lake effect snow and lack of sun in the winter and it is very dreary. Thanks for your help! You too PDF!

$75K saved up with no debt and a car fully paid ranks somewhere between spectacular and AWESOME among the tons of folks who've started similar threads on this board.

You'll be fine---no doubt about it; LA's traffic is certainly as obnoxious as Chicago's is (my parents were born there so I know the city quite well), but that shouldn't be a big deal for you at all, perhaps depending on where within LA you'll be residing.
