i was taking the 108 metro bus on Slauson and i noticed the train tracks all the way through south LA. i don't know too much about LA's history. can anyone here tell me what those tracks are there for? can a light rail be used sometime in the near future using those tracks? thanks.

It is a branch line that belongs to the Burlington Northern/Sante Fe Railroad. The line originates at the BNSF East Los Angeles yard and I believe it terminates at the Chevron refinery in El Segundo. The railroad not only services the refinery, but also numerous industrial/commercial clients in South L.A., Culver City and Inglewood. Last time I worked in that area, there were 2-3 trains operating daily on those tracks.

While we're on the subject, take a look at google maps or google earth and noticed a straight line from Santa Ana to Watts. Used to be the Pacific Electric rail route.

You can actually see the tracks using Historic Aerials

I believe the line you referenced is due to become a new LRT line connecting the Green Line to downtown Santa Ana - West Santa Ana Transit Corridor - Have heard there is some opposition in La Palma and Cypress but other than that looks to be some low-hanging fruit for Metro to pluck. If Orange County can kick in a little bit this could get finished before some other more prominent projects.

As far as the Slauson tracks, I have heard (mostly fantasy) rumbles about a Metrolink line or LRT line from Union Station directly to LAX on the Slauson ROW.

The other day read some discussion somewhere about the Orange line in the SFV possible going from bus to light rail.

Those tracks by Slauson (they curve to the southwest just before Western Ave) are known as the Harbor Subdivision. They used to belong to the BNSF railroad, but MTA purchased them, and there are various proposals. The future Crenshaw light rail line will run along the Sub from Crenshaw Blvd down to by the airport, where the Green Line will extend to meet it. The Green Line already runs along the Harbor Sub right-of-way from the Douglas/Rosecrans station to Marine Av (Redondo Beach), and there is a proposal to extend that line to Torrance (Crenshaw Blvd). There has been talk of a Metrolink type line from Union Station to the Harbor Sub ending near LAX (it would share with the Crenshaw Line west of Crenshaw). Of all of these, only the Crenshaw is officially on the drawing board to be built, AFAIK.

I believe the Crenshaw line is in the utility relocation phase of construction. The line should be up and running by 2018 according to Metro. There hasn't been much opposition to this one besides Damien Goodman's token protests (which always lose) and the controversy over the Leimert Park Station (sounds like both mayoral candidates want it to be built). Goodman wants the line to be tunneled down Crenshaw through Park Mesa Heights - which is ridiculously cost-prohibitive for what is basically a connector line.

When I was a young boy, I had family that lived in the area of Main & Slauson, adjacent to the railroad tracks. I often witnessed some of the neighborhood ruffians engage in rock throwing at the trains when they passed. This was in the waning days of steam locomotives. One old, crusty engineer finally solved the rock throwing dilemma. Everytime his train passed the "problem" area, he'd crack open the relief valves on the locomotive and cloud the neighborhood with steam. Problem solved!

They pushed the date back to 2019 because they are behind in awarding the construction contract. link
