Metro unveils bold proposal to modernize downtown's Union Station*-*Los Angeles Times

Pretty cool! Lots and lots of new transit stuff coming from LA recently. What with the purple line, and now this.

LA Curbed has renderings: Behold Union Station's Huge Plans: Underground Concourse, New Terminal, Fred Harvey Revived - Rendering Reveal - Curbed LA

Looks very cool. It will bookend really well with SF's new terminal.

Happy that it keeps the old station building, it's really lovely.

We need to eat your apartment building to expand our transportation hub.

Nice renderings link, Gurbie.

Those apartments should have been mixed-use anyways. Sucks for the people that live there though.

The supplementary article (dated 2007) about the Moziac apartments said they only leased like 80/272 units. So maybe its still mostly empty. Oh the dreams of real estate developers...

Their current website seems to suggest otherwise...lists about 10-20 vacancies.

But it's probably for the best - even if they worked around it and didn't tear it down, who would want to live right next to construction of this magnitude for...god only knows how many years?

Sadly I didn't see any mention of run-through tracks for Metrolink or Amtrak. Regional passenger rail in greater L.A. will never rise to its potential as long as all trains have to pull in and back out.

ETA: Apparently I was wrong about the track reconfiguration, after all. This is great news for the future of regional passenger rail as it makes trips through Union Station much more competitive with other modes.

I'd first heard about a proposed Run-Through Tracks Project about 10 years ago and after that there never seemed to be any updates on the proposal to be found online.

From what I've heard, the Mosaics need to be torn down. And yet so young, but another downtown residential not kept up well.
