The Crown Victoria Police Interceptors are beefed up, made to be ridden hard and put up wet, and pretty much indestructible, but they are not fast in any way, shape or form. The 4.6L motors produce a lousy 250hp combined with a decade-and-a-half-behind-the-times 4 speed automatic, and have to propel an already heavy sedan with several hundred pounds of the mechanical upgrades and the police gear, lightbar, etc.

In this day and age where we have Camrys doing 0-60 in 5.8 seconds and full size Chevy Silverados doing it in 5.5, it's no wonder they've retired them. It was long overdue. Basically the only car a CV PI is going to catch is a slow economy car. They do 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in the high 16s which is slowwwwww by any standards in today's world, let alone for a police car.

The newer, replacement cop cars are much, much faster. The Taurus PI packs the EcoBoost V6 and the Dodge and Chevys have very powerful, updated V8s. Police cars have finally caught up with the rest, speed wise. I seriously doubt they are remotely as durable as the Crown Vics, though.

And I may be bashing the CVs, but they're my favorite police car. The newer ones just don't look right, lol. That or I'm just not used to them yet.

Thank god those California cops know how to drive like mad men. They surely save a lot of lives on the roads with the lights and sirens!
That's a strategy, to hold back from the chase. So the person they're chasing doesn't drive faster putting more lives at risk. I forget what the technical name of it is. But a lot of times police will call for a pull back and chase at a further distance.
