I have been reading all the Los Angeles news websites daily and it seems to be a lot of violence throughout the city and surrounding areas. What's the deal with that?

Violence and sex sells. It's 'sensational', so the media promotes it. 'Nobody' cares about reading good news. Violence in L.A. is the same as anywhere else.

Crime is up nationally. Not a big deal, and the increase is LA isn't even as high as the national increase.

Also with server space being relatively free compared to TV time or print space stories which before did make the edit now do. A decade ago I was losing a customer a year to homicide. Only one murder got mentioned on TV or made a fee inches in the LA Times. And that was because a 60 and a Hoover were being buried at the same time at the Inglewood cemetery and those two sets of Crips got into a gunfight with each other.

Interesting to see this post as I just saw an article about a guy that was shot and killed in Mar Vista

Venice man, 54, shot and killed in Mar Vista

Marvista isn't Brentwood or Beverly Hills..but it's generally considered a safe area these days where you don't 'expect' those kinds of killings.

A couple other examples
Shooting in Palms alley leaves 1 dead; LAPD is investigating - LA Times

The Comedy Store closes for a night after shooting leaves one dead - LA Times

I always thought it seemed weird that the LAPD/city was saying violent crime was down, yet it seemed like there was still a lot of violent crime going on..

This is why

Los Angeles Crime Rate Aggravated Assaults Higher

"Investigation shows aggravated assaults were not counted as violent crimes

The Los Angeles Police Department incorrectly reported 14,000 assaults as minor offenses between 2005 and 2012, according to a new report, making the city’s crime rate look significantly lower than it really is.

The Los Angeles Times analyzed eight years of LAPD crime data and found that aggravated assaults had been routinely classified as “simple assaults” and therefore weren’t counted in the city’s numbers tallying violent crime."

Sure..we are supposed to be believe it was just a "data error"...for 8 YEARS??

I'm sure it wasn't that they wanted to make themselves look better to get more money , benefits and power..

It is kind of a myth. I lived in Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim and Carson and there are always instances of violence and theft but certainly not any more than I witness in Las Vegas or in Missouri for that matter.

The homeless crisis has pushed up violence in Mar Vista as well as the rest of the Pacific Division, even though Venice and Palms are worse. The recent increase in crime in the city of L.A. is largely driven by Central and Pacific divisions, and to some extent Hollywood - reflecting how much it's linked to the homeless issue. Don't know if the death of Helper was homeless related. Where it happened (Charnock and Purdue) is usually as tranquil as Brentwood.

As for the LAPD and statistics: the ONLY reliable indicator of crime levels is homicides, as they can't be hidden as easily. LAPD has a history of manipulating the stats to make it look like crime is lower, and the Sheriffs Department (and many other departments as well) has a history of manipulating the stats to make it look like crime is higher. Also, in a city like L.A. with so many people involved in illegal activity of various kinds, many crimes will not get reported to the cops. E.g. drug dealers aren't going to call the cops when they get robbed....

Crime stats is a fairly unreliable way to gauge crime. Stats get manipulated, crimes go unreported, people decline to press charges, victims are not located, etc.

LA is like NYC, both large and reasonably dangerous cities. But they are not the high crime hell holes like you find in the midwest cities.
