Im moving to LA in 5 months and have narrowed it down to a few neighborhoods, north and east hollywood, mid-city, and sherman oaks. East hollywood seems the most convenient since i would work in WeHo, anyone have an opinion on the area? Is there a reason for such affordable rents? Crime?

You get what you pay for. You know they have a subway train that runs from Studio City to Hollywood? I'd much rather live in Sherman Oaks than East Hollywood if the price was the same. The only thing that might drive you crazy is the commute.

It's hit and miss but don't rule out East Hollywood because that area is changing quickly, especially where it borders Silver Lake and Los Feliz. There are good deals to be had now.

East Hollywood is OK in pockets, which can change from block to block. But LOTS of helicopter noise from cops and hospitals, and parking can be a major issue.

East Hollywood would probably be good if you are looking for an area in or close to hipster areas like Los Feliz , SilverLake.
I was walking around there recently and was pretty surprised that to see a lot of homeless tent communities with lots of trash on the street. Obviously not the only part of L.A where this happens..but this was right in the open on major streets..

Shermans Oaks is a lot cleaner less gritty than any of the other areas you mentioned.
Depending on where in East Hollywood you'll be living and what part of WeHo you'll be working in, it actually might take you the same or more time to get to west hollywood. Level of traffic congestion on a route is much more important than distance in L.A

North Hollywood might be good too and if you live close to the metro rail (redline) it could be convenient as you could get to Hollywood /Highland n like 12 minutes or so.
From there you'd have to get on a bus though..you'd have to figure it out.

Knowing the different parts of L.A myself , I think i'd rather live in sherman oaks because it's cleaner , low crime . If you want to live right in the center of an edgy/hipster type area though it might not be the best choice.

Of all the areas you've mentioned, Sherman Oaks is the best area ... and the most expensive. It has the low crime, actually looks generally nice, and there's still a lot of things to do as both Sherman Oaks and nearby Studio City have a lot of bars and restaurants on Ventura Blvd.

In terms of commute to WeHo, East Hollywood is the closest. East Hollywood is getting better, but it's just too grungy and congested for my liking. I'd only suggest it if you really want to be within walking distance to hip parts of Los Feliz and Silver Lake.

However, I'd rather live in a better area and have a little longer commute.
