This was just on the front page of the LA Times. I knew some college or high school kids are homeless, but I'm shocked it's that many. I also read about high school kids with poor or no housing and they have to do their homework in their car because it's the only place with enough light.

How do kids have enough money to go to Cal State but don't have a room? Also textbooks are often grossly overpriced.

About 460,000 kids go to Cal State in total.

Scholarships and aids pay their tuition. I am guessing they are homeless because they can't find a job to earn money for rent and other stuff.

One cool thing about Cal State is that you pay per unit and you can only take 1 or 2 classes. Not like in UC Berkeley, you have to take at least 12 units at a time, and you pay the same amount regardless of how many classes you're in.

People in general are struggling. So many people work a lot but still have to use food stamps. Rents are going up.

Why dont they just live at home or borrow rent money from parents? Probably better to just live at home and go local Cal State.

This article is deceiving.

LA Times chose to carry the university's definition of "homeless" into their public-facing article. The university's definition was constructed based on criteria that would enable social programs to apply to more students that may be in need of help. For example, subsidized food or rent. One cannot equate their definition of "homeless" to traditional homelessness outside of the walls of the institution and expect their message to resonate. By their calculations, more than 46,000 students would be "homeless" which we know to be more than all of the homeless in Los Angeles, period.

So shame on LA Times for putting out this cheap click bait.

Having said that, there are certainly homeless students. A combination of high tuition and housing costs probably has something to do with it.

While I have a UC degree back from the days it was a great value, my friend a high level UC admin told me he would recommend Cal State these days and stay at home with parents unless you are getting a truly special degree from UC with internships and such.

Are you sure this is true? When I attended a CSU back around the turn of the century my full time student tuition was the whether I took 12 units for 18 units.

Not true at all at Cal State. The students who take only one class at Cal States are getting ripped off for excessive tuition. If someone takes a single 3 credit class at SF State they pay $2091 per semester = $697/credit. If they take 18 credits they pay $3240/semester = $180/credit.
