I thought the Olympics coming to your city was a recipe for economic ruin.

It is if you need to build all the venues and have no use for them afterwards.

Ah, ok. Yes, you're right. I remember Sochi and Brazil being basket cases after the Olympics came and went.

Most major sporting events should just take place in the US. We have the infrastructure and the means to host all events.

It is. Especially nowadays with the cost of security.

Estimates have a funny way of going way up

"In yet another example of how the Olympics are a financial vortex and a terrible growth plan for cities, Tokyo, the host of the 2020 Summer Games, has revealed that its costs have already doubled initial estimates.
Tokyo won the 2020 Games with a bid that estimated costs would be 730 billion yen, or $6.6 billion. That cost now, according to an AP report? An estimated 1.4 trillion yen, or $12.6 billion. And the Games are still more than three years away."

Remember, LA hosted the Games in 1984 and turned a profit on it. I don't believe they need to do a whole lot of building, just have to refurbish the existing venues and locations as needed.

So do some other places. The Olympics were fine in China, Japan, Western Europe, etc.

Brazil's economy was in decline by the time Rio got the Olympics.

The Atlanta Olympics were a failure although not as bad as Rio and Athens. I suppose Atlanta would have been even more inept as a post-9/11 Olympics host. The city was clearly incapable of holding a large scale event like the Olympics as it was.

To help clean up the streets, I heard the city of Atlanta and county pulled funds to give vagrants and homeless a one way bus ticket to anywhere they wanted to go. Guess which travel destination many chose? Maybe we can return the favor.
