you know, I was just thinking: why dont we build roads with the best material possible? yeah it might be expensive but in the long run, it'll be cheaper because we wont need as many repairs, etc.

In government, you can't never build anything this the most expensive material. By law, the City must always chose the most economical option.

Streets are always going to be crappy...

...because what would their unionized government workers do in 5-7 yrs when traditional roads become crappy again? Simply find another job? No way...that's hard or something.

True , just like many government departments could modernize and be more efficient by utilizing technology in certain ways , but then that would mean less jobs.

I was kind of surprised to go to the Registrar's office recently and I didn't have to fill out a paper form, but they make you do it online. They have computers there or you can do it on your phone.

Then the person at the desk scans that barcode that is generated to process the request.

So I guess they are adopting technology, but it just happens really slowly. I'm guessing it's got to be because of bureaucracy and the fear of jobs being eliminated.

Rampant inefficiencies in government processes continue to inflate spending. What's new, right?

There was a sign of promise when the Trump admin banded together a technology advisement board...but we all know how that unfolded.

It happens slowly because they can't fire an employee and replace him/her with technology. They must wait until enough are at retirement age then make the changes.

Although it's not quite germane to the discussion since our roads really do need repaired, this scene came to mind:
