Just me why, is it better to have roommates?

If you can only afford $1k/mo for rent in LA, you're going to need roommates. Well, I suppose you might get very lucky and find a tiny studio, but it will probably be sketchy.

$1K/mo is pretty low.

What is it about LA that makes you want to move there? It's more than a chance conversation a few years ago, right?
Are you looking to work in Hollywood, or like the climate, or the beach, or what?

Big cities in California are pricey. Coastal areas are pricey. High desert is pretty cheap.

Oh, and toss the tweeds before you come.

Are you thinking you can just move to the US because you want to? You can't. Check the visa situation.

Do you have a parent or spouse here? No? You can visit, but can't work on a visitor visa. If you come on Visa Waiver Program, you can only stay a few months, and if you even leave 1 hour too late, you can never use VWP again.

Visa can be hard to get, & work is not that easy to find wither. LA is very expensive, it is not all like the the beach shows on tv. Rents will be very high too. Sorry for the reality check.

With exception of the far north coast, the CA coastal strip is quite expensive in terms of housing....either to rent or to buy. $1k budget is doable in other areas of CA for an apartment.......but, my assumption is these more affordable areas of
CA are not areas that would be of interest to you....I do know city you would be moving from, London, is not a bargain priced city to live in.

A $1K a month rent in California? That will get you a nice place in the ghetto.

Thanks to all that respond
Don't move. Your budget is too low. You'll be living in the streets. Triple your budget for a nice rental. That's why we (two well-paid professionals) left California.

Max 101;
Once you get away from the coastal strip of CA, rentals can be had in your stated budget, that are not in a ghetto. Couple examples below that took me 5 min to find. (just examples, not suggestions)
Ist one is located in a area where you can expect during summer for it not to be uncommon for the temperature reach & exceed 100 F
The 2nd one is located in a smaller size city by the ocean...weather will NOT like the LA area.

Perhaps it's best to put this idea of moving to LA (or anywhere in CA) on hold for now.....
