Why is there so much traffic on the Los Angeles freeways between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM?

I now know the norm for Los Angeles is that “rush hour” is 24/7.

I know that “supposedly” there is a great chunk of people that live in SoCal that work from home, yet one would not know that driving our Los Angeles freeways.

Yet figuring most people should be at work or school by 9:00 AM and should not be getting ready to go home until after 2:00 PM, I am just astonished that often, about 99% of the time, that most freeways are jammed at some point while just trying to drive 5 miles or less.

I work 10 miles from home. I live in the LAX area and work in Culver City. I work part-time and have flexible daytime work hours, so I try to go to work after 10:00 AM and try to be home by 5:00 PM when I can. If I am lucky, I can occasionally be home by 2:00 PM . . . but it just depends on my workload on any given day. If I try to be at work by 8:00 AM, it will take me 50 - 60 minutes to get to work. If I try to be at work by 10:00 AM, it will take me 25 minutes to get work. If I were able to take the freeway with no traffic, it would only take me 15 minutes to get to work. Yet if I don’t leave work by 2:00 PM, it will take me longer than 25 minutes to get home. If I leave work at 5:00 PM, then it will take me 50 - 60 minutes to get home.

Yet I was just wondering, what are some of the readers in this group opinions of why is there so much traffic on the Los Angeles freeways between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM? Where are so many people going during that time frame, where there is a traffic jam 99% of the time?

I work from home and usually drive to the gym during those times to avoid the before/after work crowd.

Those are prime time hours, it's been jammed up since the 80s.

I want to know why I10 East out of Santa Monica is literally parking lot jammed at 8PM. Yes, at night.

Because they need to widen the freeways instead of spending taxpayer money on stupid things like the bullet train that will never get built, public transit that nobody uses.

Ya, just keep widening the freeways til’ the city is nothing but freeway.

Ever notice that it has never worked to only rely on one mode of transportation?

Your opting for the exact same thing that brought us to this mess.

Beach goers heading home to the SGV would be my guess. I live in Alhambra and have experienced it. Work from home so I can plan accordingly. The sun is setting at around 7:20? right now. Ever been on the pier and see the mass exodus right when the sun goes down?

Maybe you'll notice a difference when the sunset gets later. Then again we'll be in summer and that means more tourists.

Just a theory. I'm a transplant. I love L.A. but don't ask me to figure this town out...especially the traffic.

Basically, the there's too many people living in the LA metro area for the current system to handle. Is what in engineering we refer to as a Level of Service: F, where there is complete gridlock and cars can no longer move.
