Oh, gosh. That brings back memories. About 30 years ago I was working as an ESL teacher for a language school, and they would send me on-site to the Kal Kan headquarters in Vernon. Looks like it was just a few blocks from Farmer John. I was driving up there early in the morning about twice a week, and there were almost always some big trucks carrying livestock in that direction. It was kind of sad to see. Now I know where they were going. There was a funky smell, too.

The Vernon plant and its associated hog-production farm have been the target of weekly vigils organized by the Animal Alliance Network, protesting the treatment of baby pigs raised in cramped conditions until they are loaded on trucks bound for the slaughterhouse.

“They are packed into trucks with over a hundred of them piled together, often without room to move freely,” according to the organization’s website. “These pigs are usually raised in warehouses without windows and the first time they see the light is when they are loaded onto these trucks.”

Wow. I had no idea it was still there. One of my college classmates worked there for a summer job. I still remember what he told me about that job, I wish I had forgotten.

Cost of Doing business in California = The state rolling out a new law requiring livestock be given more spacious confinement.

I hate seeing any animal suffer so I'm going with the libturds on this one...

More liberal Californians are becoming vegetarian now, so a closure of this plant is imminent.

I'm not sure that follows...a lot more people including liberals are not vegetarian, than are.

The tax loss (and 1800 job losses) will just get passed down to the everyday citizen. Big friggin deal. At least the pigs will be comfortable before getting hit in the head with a sledgehammer

Also closing operations in Utah and Arizona as well as California.

Seems like the Vernon closing had to do with unions.union busting I think.
But all 3 states suffer from drought which livestock farming using a lot of water to grow feed and fatten pigs for years.

Smithfield and homeless well known American brands are owned by China companies.
