We are relocating from Chicago to LA area and need to find an AFFORDABLE, SAFE neighborhood for a family.

*We will spend 350-400k
*We need a 4 bedroom house - at least 1700 sq feet (AT LEAST)
*We can be located anywhere on the North side of LA to Monterrey area as there will be a commute between LA and SF and the rest of the time is at home.

Good schools are very important given we have 2 kids....

Open to any location that fits these needs...

I don't much about the central coast area in terms of real estate, but I would think you are going to have to get pretty far out of LA to get what you are looking for. Also, make sure to look stringently at the school systems. Most people here I know (LA area and suburbs) have to pay to put their kids in private schools because the public school system is pretty weak.

Default LA bad choice for family

Having been to LA more that I'd like to admit, there is no question in my mind I would never raise kids there. Unless you want the by-product to be a superficial, self-centered, oblivious woman with nothing to focus on other than trying to best other women with enhancement procedures- forget it. Really. LA folks perseverate on money accumulation, status, wanna-be hollywood famous....etc. It is the most shallow place on earth.

Default Thanks - here are some clarifications...

We are moving to CA by relocation - not fun and want to make sure we can find the true best option for our family. We have the flexibility to work from home with my husband having to drive to UCLA and other medical facilities occasionally. As long as we are within an hour or two we are fine. I am open to really looking anywhere, I just thought the coast was the most central between the two cities.

Default no buffer with hour drive

The problem with LA is that there really are no acceptable areas within an hours commute. It takes forever to drive anywhere.... almost all of the periphery of LA is now feeling repercussions- overcrowding, pollution, crime, racial problems, and malaise for those unfortunate enough to incessantly have to worry about the family and kids while living there.
Don't do it, even if the job pays well. You will regret it.

Since you have some flexibility, I would definitely lean more toward the central coast if possible. The suggestions above were all good.

Apart from the downright dangerous areas I find LA to be an exiting and dynamic city,my sons friends who were all born here seem level headed and focused kids.
Yes there's plenty of "dangerous women" that's just part of the way of life here and no different to any big city.
I love it and I guess that makes me kind of shallow...I suppose.

If LA reflects America, and it's "enlightened, well adjusted, upcoming and outstanding next generation," ......we are in trouble. .. I hope you are not serious, or maybe you have never experienced better.
