LOS ANGELES - Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa unveiled a $5 billion plan to provide 20,000 affordable homes in the city over the next five years, but acknowledged he'll have to reach far and wide to raise the funds amid the financial meltdown.

"This is the least affordable big city in America," the mayor said at a press conference Monday. "I'll go to Washington and New York. I'll go to the Middle East, to China. We'll knock on every door that we have to."
I applaud LA Mayor Villaraigosa plan to build more affordable housing. It has been a long time coming.

he is supposed to revilatize the areas along the rail lines.
expo and gold lines.
boyle heights has seen some revitilazation projects, but some members of the community have been a bit reluctant for fear that these new housing developments will be flooded by a vastly different demographic than what currently exists in the area. really they are afraid of gentrification.

i also wonder if in his plans they are going to continue looking at the sears site as a possible housing development area. different investors including De la Hoya have wanted to turn the intersection of olympic and soto where the old sears is at into a housing, shopping, entertainment center. it would be anchored by the SEARS lofts

only time will tell.

It's called Smart Development and it's not new. Our Mayor has been pushing this one for a while and I think it's a great idea. Angelenos have been less than enthusiastic about it (because it's centered around Public Transportation Corridors) but it really is a sensational idea. Look at Hollywood and Western, the plethora of current development at Hollywood and Vine, Wilshire and Vermont...and away we go.

The only people who will be getting into affordable housing will be the illegals. They are generaly the only ones who "qualify" to get those units.
