Hi,

I've been contemplating a move to LA for some time, but I've been browsing the boards and I'm daunted by the economic climate. I suppose my biggest worry would be finding employment there. I've taught college composition for a while now, and I would like to continue doing so in LA while I tap out a novel, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if the CSU or CC schools are hiring a lot of adjuncts for English (or, perhaps, in general)? I'm also wondering if anyone has had experience in technical writing, and what the current job market is for that right now in LA?

I'm not making this move to break into the "biz," I'm just looking for a different life in a big city with some warmth for a change (I'm from Alaska). I also have a lot of friends there. So it's not absolutley essential that I live there or anything, and if people familiar with the current state of academia there advise against a move, I will stay put.

Thanks.

Did you try applying any of these college districts' websites?
What was the result?

I haven't applied yet, but I haven't seen a lot of adjunct jobs being advertised on these websites. I also recognize, however, that a lot of these jobs don't appear on the recruiting websites because they want to hire inside people, or people from out of state who are highly recommended. I guess I'm looking for the perspective of someone who's already within one of these systems as an adjunct. They can give me a much better indication as to the actual rate of hire within these universities.
