This is what Google Maps says with the "Avoid Highways" option enabled:

from: culver city, ca to: Circle Dr - Google Maps

your best bet would probably be washingtong to soto to valley if you are avoiding the freeways. if your classes are in the morning or you'll be working a full time job there, i would just take the 10 the whole way and avoid all of the red lights. it will be slow, but much faster than the cars going west on the 10. if you will be taking night classes, forget about it, that would be awful.

Are we talking morning or evening rush hour? Very different traffic pattern depending on which rush hour you are travelling in.

if you wait a couple more years you can take the train!!!

but i would suggest cutting across the city via washington (altho it gets congested south of downtown). after passing DT you can head north bound a few blocks to olympic(this is boyle heights/eastlos), once on olympic continue east bound till eastern and when you hit eastern, head north. eastern will take you straight to CSULA.

have you considered public trans? since you will be on the road you might as well take advantage of the time and read or do homework...
